In Japan magazines will publish weekly, biweekly, and monthly the stories of mangaka. Those stories that prove to be popular are then compiled as "tankoubon" (meaning a "separate volume"). Tankoubon contain a number of the serialized magazine releases and number some two hundred black and white pages.

Those quality titles that become renowned as manga are most often recreated as anime. Westerners are becoming familiar with Japanese animation but are usually unaware that it all starts with manga.
