THE BLACK MOON
ART, ANIME, AND JAPANESE CULTURE
WEBLOG KIMONO FILM REVIEWS JAPANESE COOKING LINKS

This lovely illustration portrays Sai-san praying at a Shinto Shrine. She will ring the shrine bell by pulling the twisted red and white rope that hangs before her. The ritual ringing of the bell alerts kami-sama (god) of the worshipper's presence. The placing of the character in this context is but one of the many devices the artist uses to inform the reader that Sai-san lives a lifestyle simular to those generations that have preceeded her. However, this "world of tradition" is all wrapped up in modernity. The artist's playful mixing of Japan's past with its present shows how easy it is for people to preserve their culture, if they only have the will to do so.
